The Role

We are seeking an Engineering Surveyor that will be responsible for leading survey activities, managing a small team and assisting Project Managers. You will lead in safety critical duties up to Engineering Supervisor (ES) level as required.

You must be able to demonstrate expertise in both manual and automated site surveying techniques and data processing.

Daily Activities

The Role:

• Reporting directly to the Project Lead, the Project Manager – Examination Enabling Works is responsible for day to day delivery of enabling works activities ahead of Examination and Inspection works.

• Enabling work activities will include devegetation, de-watering, silt removal, netting and other obstruction removal and access management. • The role will include significant specialist subcontractor management across the Network Rail Eastern Region.

Key Accountabilities


• Prepare Task Briefing Sheet and review applicability of it upon arrival at the structure to be examined.
• Ensure pre-prepared SSOW is fit for purpose prior to the examination.
• Carry out the examination in accordance with the company standards and promote safe working practices and leading by example.
• Take accurate photographs for inclusion in the report.
• Inform the Project management team of the status of each examination upon completion
• Prepare reports in accordance with the relevant format for the particular contract for each examination.
• Assist Management in the preparation of asset inspection tenders and quotations


Skills and Qualifications

• STE4
• Personal Track Safety (PTS)
• IRATA – Rope Access
• Minimum 2 years’ experience in examination, inspection and report writing
• IT Literate

Candidates must hold a full UK (manual gearbox) driving licence.

This vital role involves verifying and interpreting examinations and inspections of railway assets including bridges, viaducts and retaining walls, ensuring that they are safe and in good condition for Network Rail’s passengers and freight, and making recommendations for future maintenance activities.

There will be additional opportunities to help to mentor and develop our existing and growing examinations team and shape the way that our activities are carried out in the future.

We are looking for Structures Engineers with a minimum of 4 years’ experience with rail assets, or experienced railway infrastructure examiners who are able to transition into the Network Rail STE2 competency within a short duration. Training and assessment will be provided, and the successful candidate will have the following attributes:

• Ideally from either a railway Civil Engineering background or an experienced STE4 Examiner looking for the next step in their career.
• A working knowledge of examination and inspection techniques, production of high-quality reports and identification of defects and remedial actions.
• Familiarisation with Network Rail technical standards.
• The ability to make engineering decisions based on the condition and likely deterioration rate of a given structure, taking into account environmental and causal factors.
• The willingness to be held responsible for their recommendations.
• Evidence of training and mentoring staff in technical aspects of an engineering role.
• Ideally having experience in masonry, metallic, concrete and timber structures.
• Having experience with bridges, retaining walls, culverts, viaducts, and ancillary assets.
• Clear communication and the ability to distil technical information into easily understandable language.

Your working location will be home based, with travel across the region to specific sites for mentoring purposes and to our Nottingham office for project leadership events. Key Accountabilities

· Check equipment is correct and in calibration for all site activities, reporting any issues to the Utility Surveyor or Project Manager.

· Use equipment in the correct manner and keep it clean and functional before returning to stores.

· Carry out surveying tasks to the correct level of accuracy.

· Assist both the Utility Surveyors with “on-site” surveys, operating instrument or setting up equipment as directed.

· Carry out data processing and validation to required specification, submitting to Utilities and/or Drainage Surveyors for verification as per deadline.

· Produce site records as required.

· Produce Work Package Plans and Task Briefing sheets relevant for site works.

· Complete site documentation/records for all works in the field.

· Keep records up to date within the office allowing easy interrogation of data.

· Undertake Safety Critical duties in line with competencies held and certification gained.

· Undertake other duties in accordance with the requirements of the Company.

Utility Surveyor / Utilities Surveyor

Due to the continued growth of our utility department in Nottingham, we are looking for an experienced Utility Surveyor to carry out underground services, tracing surveys, carrying out the work on site through to producing detailed utility mapping survey drawings in CAD format.

Role Requirements:

The successful candidate will need:

* At least 2 years’ experience in leading on site utility survey projects;
* Experience of working with various sub-surface mapping techniques including PAS 128, GPR,
Radio Detection, electromagnetic location and drainage surveys.
* Previous experience of working with land surveyors and topographical surveys.
* Experience of working with CAD, preferably AutoCAD.
* To be able to work both alone and as part of our survey team.
* To hold a full UK driving license.
